Women's Support Center

Runggiyan's Women's Support Center was opened in Tacloban City in 1999 to provide emergency shelter facilities to women and child survivors of abuse. Since it began, the Center has helped over 300 clients.

The Women’s Support Center (WSC) is located in Tacloban the regional capital of Eastern Visayas. Emergency shelter facilities are frequently used by Violence Against Women (VAW) survivors and their dependents. Since it opened in 1998 the WSC has helped over 300 clients. The WSC involves the allocation of physical space and facilities with the capacity to provide temporary shelter for up to five women per month. The following basic services are provided:

  • Reception Securing and Initial Counseling. First interview and response to the case of VAW, and discussion of the needs and options of the clients.
  • Health Care. Immediate medical attention especially for cases of physical injuries and/or sexual assault, reproductive health care and curing of infections, etc.
  • Temporary Shelter (if needed). Board and lodging will be provided to women and children who may have accompanied them, for a maximum of two weeks, at the center or some other more secure shelter.
  • Legal Counseling and Case Support. Legal options will be discussed and a lawyer will be provided to handle the case based on the women’s decision.
  • Psychosocial Counseling. More intensive counseling will be provided especially for cases of deeper trauma, towards deeper healing and empowerment.
  • Livelihood Support. Micro-credit will be accessed by the women survivors especially victims of domestic violence to help them be more economically independent. Linkaging to other institutions for livelihood training and assistance.
  • Referrals. Women are referred to Bantay Panimalay Inter-Agency Committee members or to other institutions for services needed not available in the Center.

The Women's Support Center provides addtional services for women who feel at risk or who are just seeking information. Our Resource Library contains literature, publications, leaflets, videos and tapes that can help women and young women learn more about their choices and their rights.

The WSC operates as a drop in center so please feel free to come by and visit us. For information on your nearest support center for VAW survivors see our VAW information services
