Runggiyan runs two projects providing educational opportunities for out of school youth, child labourers and others who missed the joy of learning. The Home Study Program is an alternative form basic education which is available to all. Students learn from modules taught by volunteers. Over 170 learners are engaged in home study through Runggiyan, including inmates of Tacloban City jail, and young people who have not finished formal education for financial reasons. The scholarship program enables former child laborers in the depressed municipality of Santa Fe, Leyte, to gain a formal education through the provision of school uniforms, equipment, and other support. Runggiyan believes in borderless education for all regardless of age, race, gender, economic/social status etc. Through two specific projects, Runggiyan is able to offer hope to many through our Scholarship Program and Home Study Program. Angelica is just 15 and wants to be a scientist when she finishes her studies. Roslyn is also 15 and has aspirations of becoming a teacher. When one meets the Runggiyan scholars of Santa Fe, one is impressed by their optimism and hope for a brighter future. Several years ago, before Runggiyan intervened, these same children were working as domestic helpers and farm laborers with no education and little hope of escaping the poverty trap. Since 1996, Runggiyan has been helping nine former child laborers to attain a formal education. These children were formally working in the rice fields to help generate income for their families who could not afford to send them to school. Through the provision of uniforms, supplies, contributions and support services, Runggiyan is helping these children and their families towards a brighter future. Students of the Home Study Program comprise of out of school youth and other learners who have been denied an education because of economic restraints or other reasons. Over 170 learners are studying the Angelicum College recognised course through home study modules. Runggiyan's volunteer teachers help to make this project more successful through the provision of educational support. Other Runggiyan projects; |
