Christian group pushes to protect families from society’s modern evil
By: Joey A. Gabrieta

TACLOBAN CITY – A Christian group, which is mostly composed of professionals, said that it’s high time to protect the family from the modern evils that is attacking it.

In a press conference held Tuesday afternoon at the social hall of the Santo Ni ño Parish, the group said that “attacks” directed against the family, which is the acknowledged to be the basic unit of our society, is becoming vicious.

“Separation among couples has become so common nowadays because of these attacks against the family. Children are also affected as they engage to some activities that are not suited of their age and character,” Dr. Corazon Soriano, one of the founders of the “Subtle Attacks Against the Family Explained (Safe), said.

Among these “attacks” that the group that wanted the family be shielded from were on the widespread availability of pornographic materials and even the proposed bills pending in Congress which proposes for a family to limit their children to two or the one which they claimed would allow the practice on abortion in the country.

The group also lamented on the promiscuity and so much curiousness among today’s young generation. They claimed that correct sex education must be taught among them to avoid unwanted pregnancies.

Also present during the press conference were Jess Abrera, editorial cartoonist of the Philippine Dauily Inquirere; Fr. Erbie Lajara, director for family and life of the Palo Archdiocese; Dr. Belen Galapo, president of the Catholic Health Professionals of Palo Archdiocese (Chapa), among others.

Lajara said that the Catholic Church is supportive on the crusade being waged by the group saying that it is high time now that the family is protected from all “evils” that come its way.

He noted that sadly, the intention of some breadwinners to provide their respective families some comforts in life had contributed to the disintegration o3f the family. The young priest also said that children of these kinds of families, in turn, become easy prey and fall to commi0t immoral and illegal acts.

For her part, Galapo said that they formed Chapa on the realization that doctors sold not only help their patients be held from their physical fitness but even help them heal spiritually.

“There is also a need among us doctors to spread spiritually among our patients. And in a way, Chapa serves us for some value among us for value reformation,” she said.

Yesterday, the group spearheaded a forum-cum lecture held at the Kanhuraw Convention Center on the different issues affecting today’s family society in general. The group is also slated to hold today the same activity to be held at the mini-theater of ten regional office of the Commission on Audit (COA) at the Government Center in Palo.
