BORONGAN, Eastern Samar – It’s all the system go as the Municipality of Borongan readies for the June 20,2007 plebiscite converting this 2nd class Municipality into a city.
According o SB Member Rodrigo Caharop, the formal information campaign being undertaken by the town’s leadership formally started last June 4 where all the 61 Barangay Chairmen were called to a conference at the SB Session Hall to inform them of the schedule of activities in their respective barangays abut the information campaign on the conversion of Borongan into a city.
Six teams composed of youth leaders were fielded to upstream and island barangays to disseminate information and to entertain queries about the advantages and disadvantages once Borongan became a city. The campaign will end on June 18, two days before the plebiscite.
Meanwhile, in another interview of Atty. Raymond Gunda, election officer of Borongan, he told LSDE that their office is now ready to undertake the plebiscite converting Borongan into a city on June 20, but he is still waiting for the Comelec Resolution setting the different rules and regulations governing the said activity. He added that he is also waiting for additional instructions from the Comelec central office.
It was also learned that Mayor Fidel V. Anacta is still in Manila to follow-up other requirements for Borongan’s cityhood. But SB Member Jessie Solidon said that the Sangguniang Bayan has already appropriated the amount of P4 million for the event.
On the other hand, the Municipal Police Station of Borongan said that the entire police force is ready to keep the plebiscite peaceful and orderly. PO2 Reynaldo Gerna, police investigator, said that even if they are also securing the enrolment of pupils this school year, they are also ready to safeguard the credibility of the plebiscite on June 20 this year.
