DILG to conduct orientation to elected gov’t officials

TACLOBAN CITY - The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) will conduct a nationwide orientation program to all local elected officials this coming July to August 2007.

Jose Yee, Jr., Leyte provincial director of the DILG, said the purpose of this orientation program is to talk about issues concerning the new policies and memorandum of the government that are applicable to the elected officials.

Yee said this will be participated in by 41 municipalities with the municipal mayors to be clustered into five districts.

He added that the nationwide orientation program is mandatory to all newly and re-elected officials. To the newly-elected officials, this is compulsory for them to familiarize with the role of being a local government officials while for the re-elected ones they are not that required though they must also attend because there is a transition of old to new governance.

“For the newly elected officials, there are special topics to be discussed to them such as good governance which concerns about the financial accountability, the government funds, citizens participation that need not to be biased and local legislation. Then some topics to be talk for administration are financial and physical plan, resource generation, wherein the local chief executive should be resourceful to look for other funds,” Yee said.

He added that among other topics for the said orientation are social services including health, education, peace and security and for economic services are agricultural and business enterprises.
