PALO, Leyte – As the election nears, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) appealed to politicians in the region not to paste their campaign materials on traffic warning signs and bridges.
DPWH Regional Director Jaime Pacanan said in an interview with Leyte Samar Daily Express that if the people will place their campaign materials in signage, it doesn’t serve its purpose.
As a result, these signs don’t reflect anymore at night even if the posters are removed after the polls. The bridges need repainting as well. “To eliminate this problem, we appeal to the politicians to use preventable approach,” he said.
Pacanan admitted that the government has a hard time monitoring the compliance of this law since they do it during night time. He asked local barangay officials to be vigilant as well.
According to him, one of the causes of accidents is the absence of road safety devices. “This will result to the loss of life and properties.”
The DPWH regional chief executive also noticed that some of these warning signs are being vandalized, destroyed and stolen. Poverty is one of the reasons why this problem happened. |
