NPA kill village chief in Dolores

By: Joey A. Gabieta

TACLOBAN CITY - A barangay chairman in a remote village of Dolores, Eastern Samar was killed by a group of armed men inside his house last Monday night.

Lt. Col. Wilson Lleva, commanding officer of the 14 th Infantry Battalion, which is based in Oras town, also in Eastern Samar, identified the victim as Arturo Pomida, village chief of Santa Cruz.

According to Lleva, the incident took place last Monday around 7 p.m. while the victim was inside his house.

The perpetrators, identified by Lleva to be members of the New People’s Army, barged into the house of the victim and shot him several times that resulted to his instantaneous death. He was hit at the different parts of his body.

After killing Pomida, the six men fled towards the mountainous are of the village, 14 kilometers away from the town proper. The son of the victim, Mark, who was present during the incident, was left unharmed by the group.

“He (Pomida) was killed by the NPAs because of his refusal to give in to their extortion activity,” Lleva, in a text message, told Leyte Samar Daily Express.

Lleva lauded the gallant act of the barangay leader on his refusal to give in to the demand of the NPA members, saying that local officials and residents should not accede to the “extortion activity” of the rebel group.

“WE will strengthen the security so that same incident will not happen again,” Lleva said.
