CALBAYOG CITY – Mayor Mel Senen S. Sarmiento and party gladly welcomed the Society of Philippine Surgeons In America last Saturday, Jan. 14, for a week-long Madical Surgical Mission. This laudable undertaking aws a joint project of Congressmen Reynaldo S. Uy of the first District of Samar and Catalino Figueroa of the Second District of Samar and Mayor Mel Senen S. Sarmiento of Calbayog City.
The Society of Philippine Surgeons in America is a 42-man team composed of doctors, nurses and volunteers who attended to patients from all over the district of Samar and Calbayog City.
The team was led by Dr. Manny Caedec, Dr. Durado, Dr. Barcelona and to mention some of the doctors in the team, we have Dr. Tangco, Dr. Roco, Dr. Quiros, Dr. Flickinger, Dr. Ignacio, Mr. Ed Puno with Ms. Jennifer Arambulo and Ms. Tina Hong among other as volunteers.
The screening lasted for two days at the TTMIST and went on at the City Health Office to accommodate those coming from far flung barangays and from the hinderlands.
Simultaneously, major and minor surgical operations took place at the three hospitals, namely, the Calbayog District Hospital, the Calbayog Sanitarium Hospital and the St. Camillus Hospital. Common cases treated included inguinal hernia, thyroid enlargement for thyroisectomy, lipoma and excession of mass and cysts. There were ophthalmic cases and gynecology.
This Medical Surgical Mission was wide in scope and the second to be hosted by the city of Calbayog; the first was the US Mercy Medical Surgical Mission which took place way back year 1994.
