PALO, Leyte – The National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) here said there was no major industrial locator that came to the region last year despite all the promotional efforts made.
NEDA Regional Director Buenaventura Go-Soco admitted to Leyte Samar Daily Express in an interview that “that’s something that we need to work on further.”
In fact, Go-Soco disclosed, “there is no Information Communications Technology (ICT) firm that has yet come in despite the promotions that started in June.”
he said this was even the theme of the Visayas Area Conference of the chambers of commerce and industries last year but nothing big has happened yet about it.
Go-Soco told Express that no significant development can be seen as of now in terms of establishment of major industries in the region, but he is hopeful that through the efforts of all the people concerned in the region we will soon attract big investments to come in.
“No one has decide to come in yet, therefore it’s going to be a challenge for all of us to work on,” Go-Soco said.
According to him, this is primarily because when it comes to ICT the region has not yet met the standards of those who want to put their firms here in terms of capability of workers.
“So our educational system has to make some adjustments,” Go-Soco said.
He suggested that the schools in the region should make sure that their graduates possess the skills that the industries are looking for.
He said they should make up themselves with the demands of the call centers, programming firms, animation films, finance and accounting firms who might want to make use of Filipino talents.
“We are hoping through our regional development council and its committees to be able to craft something that will really spur development in these ares,” Go-Soco said.
