TACLOBAN CITY – By –laws were made and other initiatives in promoting virgin coconut oil are now \being pushed by a newly-formed association in the region.
Called as Eastern Visayas Virgin Coconut Oil Producers (EVVCOP), the group aims to organize the VCO producers in the region so as to better monitor the progress of VCO production in the region.
Olive Tiu is the president of the said organization with seven members and one board of director in the provinces of Biliran, Leyte and Southern Leyte.
During the group’s first meeting, they proposed steps that would determine the market for the product and identify other producers who could join the organization.
To recall, The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) disclosed that the region has virgin coconut oil production already though still coming from backyard producers.
According to PCA, the identified producers in the region are continuing the processing of cocomilk into virgin coconut oil. Bottled products made by them, are even out in the market already, it was learned.
However, PCA stressed that the producers, especially the members of EVVCOP, should produce oil in consonance with the standards of the central office in order to meet the required quality of the product.
It is even advised that scientists should at least guide the producers in the manufacturing and evaluate the quality of produced coconut oil whether inferior or not
