Hon. Remedios “Matin” Petilla, Congresswoman of the 1st District of Leyte, spearheaded the ribbon cutting ceremony to formally acclaim the University landmark highlighting the celebration of the 2 nd University Charter Day held at the EVSU Rotonda last August 7.

A holy mass presided by Rev. Fr. Erby Davy Lajara preceded the said ceremony wherein Dr. Bonifacio S. Villanueva, SUC President, together with Hon. Alfredo “Bejo” Romualdez, mayor of Tacloban City, Hon. Malou Go-Soco, Board Member (1 st District of Leyte), and Atty. Buenaventura Go-Soco, NEDA Regional Director, assisted Cong. Petilla.

Fr. Lajara blessed the EVSU Rotonda while Cong. Petilla headed the lighting of the candles and cutting of the ribbons.

The ISLS Band and Bugle Corps and fireworks exhibition added to the enthusiasm and excitement of the audience who witnessed the ceremony while Cong. Petilla and company threw 25 cents in the air.

“The EVSU Welcome Rotonda is a three-dimensional, scriptural depiction of the mission, vision, goals and objectives of EVSU. It stands on the site of the old Leyte Institute of Technology (LIT) Welcome Rotonda, which was constructed some time in 1965. With the conversion of the institute into a university, there was a need to renovate the structure to make it reflective of the current progress and development in our continued quest for academic excellence and competitiveness,” Dr. Catalino B. Beltran, VP for Administration emphasized as part of his speech about the brief history of EVSU Rotonda Marker.

In his inspirational message, Pres. Villanueva stated four major accomplishments of the university, (1) 2-year old university providing a good training, (2) concentrates more on academic researches, (3) extension services, and (4) production. He further stressed that, “There’s stills a higher level to strive for, there is much more in store to accomplish.”

Meanwhile, Congresswoman Petilla emphasized in her message that, “the University landmark generates awareness for people that this university exists.

“As we unveil this Rotonda marker, let us be reminded with EVSU’s excellence as being one of the primary institutions in the region,” remarked Mayor Romualdez.
