Five delegates of the ESSU Catalyst brought home much pride after bagging major awards in the 2005 Regional tertiary Schools Press Conference (RTSPC) held last December 8-10, 2005 at the Convention Center-A Leyte Park Hotel, Tacloban City.

Delegates of the ESSU to the said conference were Lannie Alamin, Editor-in-Chief; Cecilia Afable, Associate Editor; Jay Vincent Capacite, Editorial Cartoonist; Ralph Stephen Dolog, Layout artist and Maria Konica Catapang, Staff Writer.

The said conference included different lectures and contests in the various fields of campus journalism such as editorial writing, editorial cartooning, news writing, sports reporting, feature writing, investigative reporting, photo journalism, copy reading and headline writing both in English and Filipino.

The ESSU Catalyst’s maiden issue paved the way right as it was judged first place in the Best magazine category, besting other entries from other established and prominent institutions in the region.

Ralph Stephen Dolog, a first-year BSIT student from the College of Engineering and Technology, bagged the 1 st place in Desktop Publishing (English). On the other hand, Maria Konica Catapang, a freshman BSED student of the College of Education was awarded “journalist of the Year” after winning first place in both News Writing and Sports reporting in the Filipino category.
