I love Math

( Mark Geronimo – ESSU)

Hearing the very word mathematics make most students perspire in horror. What immediately comes into their minds is the confusing numerals, symbols, powers, representatives, etc. They think about the horrible binomial theorems, differentiation formulae, the SOACAATOA method, the CAOSHACO method, the Pascal’s triangle, and the like. It is very seldom that we see students, who do not scratch their heads when they encounter Mathematics’ problems, whether it’s a real life application or problems presented in school. Some students just stare blankly at the problem. And some, unfortunately, withdraw from solving without making a try.

I pity the for tow reasons:

First, I adore the valuable help that mathematics extends to me. It is my forte, Math, I mean. My grades speak of it. As a matter of fact, my elementary and high school Mathematic teachers chose me to represent my schools in Math competitions. Fortunately, I had bagged prizes. Thus, it is easy for me to exist in the world of Mathematics, without even breaking into a sweat.

Secondly, they do not realize how to conquer Mathematics. As I see it, Mathematics is no different with the childhood games we use to play. Once we learn the first step to play it, we can gradually muster the will to play it all the way. And just like any other game, Math is very important to students. Its existence is vital, a lifeline in a student’s life. It is a major food that feeds their academic selves.

Let me tell you something. When I encounter the mere word Mathematics, I reminisce the times I solved problems. And I do so with gusto. I remember how I unlocked puzzles and how solutions pop games. In other words, I do not squirm nor say yuck with distaste because it gave me beautiful experience to live by.

There were these instances when I cannot forget how this subject made me happy. A long time ago during my high school, my Math teacher gave us problems to be solved. She divided the whole class into five groups with each group solving one difficult problem carefully selected in her books. Through my enthusiasm and my group mates‘ help, we solved the problem instantly. My crush, whose attention I was vying, certainly noticed. He even asked me to help him. So you see, mathematics not only solves numerical problems that puzzle the mind. It also solves that of the heart.

Definitely, I am not saying that I am great because I know the gamut of Mathematics. What I’m trying to bring out is that, I exist in this world of numbers because I love its intricacies, its difficulties, even its subliminal effect o some people. I did sacrifice a lot to conquer this easy attitude about math. And nobody, as far as hard work is concerned can accuse me of conquering it with just the snap of my fingers.

So come on, think of Mathematics as a childhood game to be learned and to be loved. If you develop a positive attitude, believe me, all will come easy. After all, mathematics is like love. If you love it, sometimes it will like you back. If not, you just have to work hard to beget its love.
