IT developments in Eastern Visayas

Is the development of the Information Technology (IT) sector in Eastern Visayas doing well?

The call centers, which have long been expected to be established in this region, have not come.

However, we can also say that IT is not all about call centers.

We can look at other indicators, such as our human resources.

It is heartening to note that there has been an increase in the enrollment and numbers of graduates of IT courses. For instance, at the Eastern Visayas State University, the enrollment in BSIT has increased from 1,223 in CY 2003-2004 to 1,646 in CY 2006-2007.

Trainings in Medical Transcription have started in some State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), notably at the Visayas State University, Palompon Institute of Technology and the Naval Institute of Technology.

The IT facilities in all of the regions eleven SUCs have also been improved including the setting up of modern speech laboratories.

The state of our telecommunications has also improved with more lines available in most towns of Region VIII. This provides greater opportunities for an increase in computer literacy brought about by internet access.

Also important are the installation of computer units in elementary and secondary schools thus enhancing familiarity with IT at an early age. This is bolstered by DepEd’s effort to use e-learning in schools such as in teaching math and science.

Meantime, I still maintain the belief that in the near future, new IT companies will be locating in Eastern Visayas primarily because we have the people who can be employed in these companies and the communications infrastructure to support them.
