Some views on the importance of the 2007 Census of Population

Just how important is it to know how many persons reside in a barangay, town, city, province and country? Getting this data is what the 2007 Census of Population seeks to do during the whole month of August.

This is also like asking – why should I help in this effort to get an accurate count of the number of persons in my place?

Whatever be our status, work, age, gender and so on, this count will undoubtedly affect us.

One reason for this is that major users of population statistics are the government and private business sectors.

For example, the total number of persons in a city is used to determine the number of doctors, policemen and teachers who should be hired by the government.

Therefore, if the count is inaccurate then there could either be a shortage or a surplus of these government workers delivering the service. A shortage means their services will not be sufficient and many of those who need assistance will not be able to get them.

An excess means that government will be spending more than it should. This will result in a waste of funds.

For local government units, a bigger population will result in more funds coming from the national government.

And since the government provides services to or imposes regulations on its citizens, then all of us will, in one way or another, be affected by the population count.

On the part of the business sector, the population count is useful in determining the demand (or market) for their products or services and the viability of their business.

Our full support is, therefore, needed so that both the government and private sector can have a reference in providing the right amount of services and goods they should produce to satisfy demand

So, when the census enumerator visits your home give him/her accurate information.
